The Town of New Milford is moving forward with its Ethics Code work group and has appointed members to the panel so that they can get underway. The impetus for the move was a lawsuit with resulted in costs to the town and a Board of Finance member $235,000. Town leaders realized that they needed a code in place to handle future conflicts.
The state legislature has been debating a model code for municipalities for years but has lacked the collective will to pass it. Given the current budget crisis and other more prominent government administration issues such as fixing campaign finance reform, it is unlikely that the General Assembly will tackle it with success this year. New Milford has shown great foresight in making this a priority by ensuring that an ethics code and rules of procedure are instituted in their town.
